The playing on the "disabilities" (particularly in the writing of the
paper itself)definitely created a sympathy vote that made any
criticism of the content impossible under the circumstances. That was
a dirty trick, even if it wasn't the effect you intended.
As to whether they are wholly "debilitating" or a gift (intellectual
or otherwise) - that is worth arguing about.
Abnormal states of perception are widely recognised giving their
"sufferers" unusual perspectives on reality and immensely valuable in
analysing "normal" states of consciousness - Many credible
psychologists and the like have written whole books on those topics
(Sacks, Austin, Edelman, etc). You cannot dismiss this view with a
pejorative quip about "3D Glasses", however bumkum your particular
invented effects. I've actually had one (real) amblyopia sufferer come
back to me in discussions prompted by the paper, if not about its
content - be careful, you are playing with real people's heads.
Take a bow, great stunt (even if the motives leave some of us shaking
our heads), let's make some progress and move on.
