It's been a while since I looked at Cupitt, so I went to my bookshelf, took
down my copy of 'After God' and read 'a present from the author'. When I was
in Cambridge I remember going along for some discussions with him about
mysticism etc, and going away very disappointed. I'll have another look and
see if there's anything specific I can say (beyond what I've said ad nauseam
before to DMB).
If you're not familiar with the 'Radical Orthodox' group of theologians, I'd
recommend giving them a look. See in particular 'Post-Secular Philosophy'
(ed Philip Blond, pub. by Routledge) which has got lots of very recent work
on onto-theology, partly stemming from Jean-Luc Marion's stuff. It's not the
sort of stuff that I have an instinctive sympathy with, but I do find it
interesting. I'd be interested to know your thoughts on their arguments.
Have a look at
http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1058/is_13_117/ai_62023950 for an
overview of where they fit in. The Radical Orthodox were the people I
started my PhD with. They still fascinate me, even though I have significant
disagreements with them, primarily about - yes, you guessed it -
Wittgenstein and mysticism (groan).
The book you referenced sounds interesting. I'll add it to my pile on
Amazon!
