    Hey Marsha--

I hear where you are coming from. A lot of my friends agree with you
and a lot of my friends don't. I see both their sides and I try to
deal with it all using metaphor, zen, positive role models (of which I
think the man/teacher/philosopher Jesus was, along with Martin Luther
King, Buddha, Lao Tzu and scores of others--I even like some things
that Muhammad said {no, Platt, that doesn't make me a terrorist
    sympathizer}).

It has taken me a long, long time to be able to say there are some
good things about Xtianity (distinct from the mainstream screaming
me-mes) and yes, absolutely the history of organized religion,
government, humans in general is littered with horrible hatred and
bloodshed. (Have you read Starhawk? Very excellent appendix on the
burning times.) Or seen the 70's rock opera, "Jesus Christ
Superstar"? It is told from Judas' point of view, which is very
non-mainstream. I think you'd like it. He thought Jesus was a dumb
ass for not seeing it all coming. There are some great "hero worship"
scenes also that will just crack you up. Just remember there are
Xtains who believe Jesus was a teacher and not a god, just a smart and
nice guy, who is a good role model. Their focus is on the deeds, not
on the idolization of a person. And they're "good" people. I think
Sam might be one. Good people are known by their acts. And as far as
I am concerned Xtains are known by how they treat other people. Jesus
wasn't a militarist, nor was he a politician. He was kind of like a
social worker working with those afflicted with AIDS, trying to get
people to see them as human. That I admire. Like the nun in "Dead
Man Walking". What humble souls. If only I didn't get so pissed off
    . . .

(and no Platt, that doesn't make me a Christian)
