Arlo,

Surely, when we have disagreements we are acknowledging the individual as
taking
precedence over the collective insofar as we don't sic the cops on those we
disagree with.

Not sure what you mean by this. Did my post sound like I was calling 911?
Scott:
I meant (in response to your saying that there is no precedence between
individual and collective) that we acknowledge that an individual has a
right to disagree with the collective -- s/he is not forced to agree. But
since you say that what your statement wasn't MOQian, nevermind.

However much our thoughts bubble up within a social milieu, need validation
by
peers, etc., they are nevertheless thoughts of an individual. What else has
thoughts? The whole point of strengthening intellect is to make one's own
thoughts more autonomous.
[Arlo]
What is "an individual", Scott? Show me one. [skipping long explanation of
the MOQ view, which I agree is the MOQ view]
An individual is a decision-maker, an observer of the decisions made by
itself and others, an evaluator of those decisions, and the creator of new
patterns in order to change the range of choices. (These are some, not all,
properties of an individual. By the way, I do not assume there is something
that is an individual beyond all properties thereof, but then one can say
that of everything.)
