Erin,
First, I don't think "Platt is brilliant in other matters and then becomes an
idiot when he talks about politics". I think Platt is wrong on several accords,
and Platt thinks I am wrong. We disagree, and we argue our positions. I take no
offense from his posts to me, and I hope he takes no offense at mine to him.
But, if I disagree, and I feel value in arguing so, I do. So does he. I'm not
sure what the problem you have with this is. If I call him on what I see as
hypocrisy, it is little different than him calling me on something he sees as
"communistic". Rather than tell me you don't like the way I talk to Platt
(which I can see), tell me where you think I am wrong? Or where you think Platt
is right? Not "in general", but on these specific issues we've been discussing.
Second, this isn't about a literal versus metaphorical read of the Bible. Either
one won't absolve the hypocrisy of those who value personal material
acquisition above community human suffering. This is about a the "denial" or
deliberate ignoring of a very clear mandate, whether that mandate is "literal"
or "metaphorical". I do not think one needs to be an ascetic or Amish to be
"christian", although I do believe these groups come closest to adhering to the
message. Again, Erin, rather than coming back with criticisms of my style,
please tell me where you feel I am wrong in my thinking about this. Do you feel
one can be wealthy and christian with no hypocritical conflict? Explain?
Third, since you've asked this question, do you feel one has any duty to others,
or is one's life soley duty to the self? I've given you my answer.
