Should we talk about rewards in society and not just profit? Rewards for
what we value?
[Case]
That is the essence of this debate. Arlo seems to think that we are
intellegent beings should be designing a system that makes sense. Platt
seems to think that we are not smart enough or trustworthy enough to do this
and that the market place is the best system yet devised for assigning
values. From the standpoint of Quality in the ZMM sense these are two poles
of a dualism: public good versus private good. There is Quality in there
someplace but because of their different analogs (reinforcement histories)
Platt and Arlo do no agree on where Quality is found.
From my perspective the problem with the extreme capitalism is that all
value is reduced to cash and the problem with extreme socialism is that all
value is determined by committee. I would be satisfied if the public debate
was at least directed toward this dualism itself. To their credit that is
what Arlo and Platt are talking about most of the time. I vote to give them
a radio show.
