Case, I'm just sad I didn't make it into Mark's list of people in the bin,
which must be only people on his recent shit list, and so missed my
opportunity to be in the poem. It truly is a fine poem. I remember the
days when I was newly cast into the bin, with at the time Bo "Captain"
Skutvik and John "Beastley" Beasley. Mark has a long list. He used to use
the handle "Squonk" back then. Bo was cast out, John was cast out, I was
cast out, Scott was cast out long ago, too, but I guess Mark forgot and had
to cast him out again. I don't really remember Platt being cast out back
then, but then, I don't read the politics stuff and that's mainly how Platt
gets Mark's panties in a bunch. You and Ham are new to the bin, and there
are more down here, too, but ah! I remember when I got my cast away notice,
just like it was yesterday. "You are a shit, and this will be the last i
will have anything to do with you. Piss off." December 9th, 2003. Those
were wonderful days, long after I had learned to not talk to Squonk and only
responded to him when he came after me. But maybe the shift in names caused
him to forget and I needed to be cast out again.
But on a serious note, Mark is right. We don't have to talk to everyone
here. If we want, we can only join in dialogue with those who are on
similiar paths. There is nothing wrong with that in and of itself, kinda'
like a research team focusing its collective efforts. The risk is, of
course, mindless scholasticism. But there's risk to be incurred with
dialoguing with everyone. If you do that, you might never move forward, may
never extend some of your original thoughts. You'll just spin your wheels
with critics. Personally, balance is what's best, doing one and then the
other. Talk with drastically different people, then draw back and think and
try and fine tune yourself. I appreciate very much the fact that I haven't
had to talk much to Mark in the last few years. Its freed me up to talk to
others. December 9th is something of a holiday for me.
So when Mark says that he simply wishes "to engage with people who hold
similar views to my own because i want to try and develop a few ideas which
begin with the MOQ," I say godspeed. I do think that is a great idea. I
think ideas about Pirsig do need more development then they are usually
given by participants in the MD. When Mark says, "If you don't accept the
MOQ as a working philosophy, then i don't want to waste your time," I can
only thank him and extend him the same courtesy. Granted, I'm not sure I'd
say that I _don't_ accept the MoQ as a working philosophy, but its pretty
safe to say that I don't accept Mark's interpretation and have other
predelictions when reading Pirsig. As far as I can tell, Mark and I have
never profited from the conversations we have had together (granted, though,
that most of it was just Mark telling me off), so its probably for the best
that we just stay out of each other's way.
Mark says, "It is what it is!"
So it is.
