Hi all,
This is slightly off track but it occurs to me that advertising is in effect
a Tax.
Total Advertising spending the US for the first half of 2005 was $70 billion
making it $140 billion or so annually.

To compare this to the total spending of other forms of taxation here is a
cool site for looking at the US Federal budget:

Now, I can already hear the argument about how the government will shoot you
if you don't pay their taxes and that advertising amounts to more of a "free
will offering". But on the other hand there is public accountability for
regular taxes and it is unlikely that congress would be able to muster
support for "Two all beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese pickles
onions on a sesame seed bun."
I would personally drive to Washington and bitch slap my senators if they
voted in favor of my candidate for the most obscene advertising slogan ever:
Pontiac: Fuel for the Soul.
