Hello Platt,

I doubt if unemployment is the problem. France has very generous
unemployment benefits. Lack of opportunity is indeed a problem.
France has a very high minimum wage, and general unemployment in the
double digits.
Rebecca:
You have some interesting conceptions about the way the world works. I'm not
trying to be facetious. Do you seriously think that welfare can
singlehandedly combat poverty and UI benefits? Minimum wage levels are not a
serious deterrent in the quantity or quality of jobs - do you know anyone
who lives off of a minimum wage job?
Platt:
I see these riots as religious problem -- secular Europe against religious
Islam.
Rebecca:
There are definitely religious elements at play in this - however - if we
want to propose a solution to the problem, it's probably more effective to
lay off the religious angle and take a good look at the problems these
people have.
Platt:
The approach I suggest is to arrest the rioters and deport them. Also,
begin to reduce unemployment by cutting taxes, lower the minimum wage,
reduce unemployment benefits and wipe out stifling business subsidies and
regulations.
Rebecca:
Turn France into the Conservative conception of America? Ask the French how
they'd feel about that!
respectfully,
Rebecca
