    Having asked around, I've already had some feedback ....

    Apparently the manuscript that Gennie DeWeese had did indeed exist,
    but has long since been given away within the family, not sure where,
    and has not therefore been seen by visitors to Gennie for some time.

    Another pre-publication manuscript is in the Sutherland family, but is
    not with John.

    Both manuscripts appear to have been "about 200,000 words".
    I may try to track one down.
