Joe,
I am very, very unclear on what you are saying. You say I've constructed a
strawman, but I'm not at all sure what the strawman is. You say I'm caught
in SOM, but I have no idea what that means for you. For instance, when you
and Wim talk about "SOM Quality" and "MoQ Quality" you lose me because I
have a bit different understanding of what SOM and the MoQ are. The
criticism you seem to be making of me, I would say, is suffering from
definitional sleight-of-hand, the kind I referred to when talking to
Squonk. ("Squonk wrote a Review," 3/11) You say I prefer SOM, and then
assume that I am talking from an "SOM perspective" (whatever that may be),
and then criticize me for getting both perspectives wrong: "I do not see
how in SOM Quality can be anti-essence since it depends on essence for its
existence. If you are referring to MoQ Quality you do not accept
intuition." I don't get it. Is that a critique?
The problem is we share too few premises (like "MoQ," "SOM," "metaphor,"
"MoQ perspective," "SOM perspective," etc.) to engage at this point. You
just go on assuming we do share enough premises to engage in the way you've
set out, which apparently makes it look like I've constructed a
strawman. You say mine isn't a "quality exposition," but I can't really
say that yours is either. You seem to be using the terms in a contestable
way (much as I am), but I don't know what that way is. DMB would surely
accuse me of never explaining my terms, but at least in the post in
question, I told the reader what Quality was ("the ultimate metaphor") and
what a metaphor was ("an indecipherable sound or scratch") which seemed
like the most important terms that I was using in controversial ways.
