Hey DMB,

Well, linguistically I think it's a bit odd to think of an "inability" as a
"feature" of something ("...this model has air-conditioning, leather seats,
4-wheel drive, and the inability to teleport..."), but I know what you're
saying. The MoQ formally distinguishes between social and intellectual
patterns and SOM does not.
> Point 2.) The difference is huge, like the difference between rocks and

RICK
Since intellect is the newest level (chronologically speaking) I always
figured that the "evolutionary spread" (for lack of a better term) between
intellect and society was narrower than that between the inorganic and the
biological, or than that between the biological and the social. For
example, in the SODV paper Pirsig describes 'theology' as an intellectual
pattern, but 'church' as a social pattern. Elsewhere he describes
'democracy' as an intellectual pattern, but 'government' as a social
pattern. You're right in noting that the MoQ says social and intellectual
patterns are different *kinds* the same way inorganic and biological
patterns are different kinds, and biological and social patterns are
different kinds, but clearly a government is much closer to a democracy than
a rock is to a raven.
> Point 3.) This distinction goes along way toward explaining the conflicts
of
> history and of our own time.
RICK
I believe it explains quite a bit. A high quality map indeed.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
take care,
