Sam,
In this vein, a lot of what I have been arguing for is to make the conscious
decision to turn theology into the whole of religion, on MoQ grounds of the
superiority of the intellectual level over the social. To be sure, this is
not something I expect to happen any time soon, since above all it requires
a transformation of attitudes and style of intellect so that intellect can
be seen as a way of salvation, rather than the impediment it is usually
regarded as (lately -- the medievals seem to have more on the ball in this
regard). On the other hand, this is not something heretofore unseen. Jnana
yoga is one example, Merrell-Wolff is another (actually, not really
different, as Shankara was probably Merrell-Wolff's main inspiration). And
one finds glimmers in other religions.
The main intellectual movement to make this happen, in my opinion, is to
fully integrate post-modern ideas like deconstruction, in order to
thoroughly root out modernist and pre-modernist beliefs.
Self-deconstruction, one might say, is an intellectual version of
repentence. (One more book, though I have only started it, so can't honestly
recommend it: Tanabe Hajime's "Philosophy of Metanoetics").
