Steve and all:
Steve asked:
In the past I have though that you were making the mistake of classifying
"things," but perhaps your concept of pattern of value is influenced by
Wilber's holons. Do you think of these terms in the same way? How would you
distinguish them?
dmb answers:
There are some differences, but yes. I think pov's and holons are "things".
They are describing the world we live in and know. Rocks, trees, cities,
ideas and everything else we can name can be thought of as holons or static
patterns of various kinds.
I think the biggest difference between Pirsig and Wilber is only the amount
of detail. Wilber has far more levels, for example, but this is only a
closer look, not a contradiction. And I think that kind of additional
material works well. Its almost like the MOQ was broadly painted to allow us
to plug in the details and enrich the picture. Campbell does that well for
the MOQ too. I'm sure lots of things would fit like that. If I were lord and
master of the universe, I'd insist that every poster bring such details to
the MOQ picture.
