Thanks Sam. Karen Armstrong. Not too bad. She's had some smart things to say
about Islam recently too.
I'd point out, however, that in spite of the name, the party drug known as
ecstasy is more sensual and emotional than mystical. In fact, it was
originally invented by a psychiatrist to help facilitate open emotional
exchanges between couples during therapy sessions. I think the appeal is
that evokes feeling of love, open-ness and sensuality. Quite the opposite of
the original Greek meaning, it makes you very much in yourself, in your
body. Its a evokes a very gregarious mood, rather than a contemplative,
terrifying or mind-blowing shift in consciousness. It ain't what the Shamans
used.
