On Wilber, I take good ideas -- or in this case good pithy summations of
good ideas -- where I can get them, but overall I am lukewarm on Wilber. In
this case, what he calls the pre/trans fallacy, is a nice phrase to refer
to, for example, Pirsig's analysis of the hippies who thought they were
being free and spontaneous, but were actually just reverting to the
biological level.
dmb says:
Right. Naturally, Pirsig doesn't used the phrase "pre/trans fallacy", but
his criticism of the hippies describes the exact same problem. I find it
lots of similarities between them that way. If one does not fall victim to
the hobgobblin of foolish consistency and looks beyond mere terms, its easy
to see that they are often grappling with the same problems and coming up
with similar answers. Pirsig's long sustained attack on "the metaphysics of
substance" is essentially the same as Wilber's long sustained attack on
"flatland". Different terms, same basic idea. Comparing the two is like
checking a math problem.
