Hey Sam, David, and all,
SAM
I've been wondering whether there was interest in reviving the MF list
amongst contributors here?
(Without wishing to concentrate too much on my own thoughts, I know of at
least three substantial
responses to my 'eudaimonic' thesis, and it might be an idea - as it gets a
bit esoteric - if that
discussion moved across in a more structured fashion - and it would also be
time limited).

I would be interested in discussing both of these topics in the MF. But as
I recall, the MF format had problems that lead to its eventual disappearance
and I think that if we're going to start it up again we should 'change the
rules' a little to try and circumvent those problems. I'm sure many of us
(who were part of the MF) will have ideas, but I'd thought I'd throw out a
few suggestions.
First off, the 'one post a day rule'. It's designed to keep the topic paced
slower than the MD threads so that everyone has an easier time following and
getting their comments in while a point is still relevant. But many of us
don't even post as frequently as once a day in the MD, so I'm not sure one
post a day really has that much effect on the pace. If the pace isn't slower
(more focused) in the MF, then it offers no advantage over holding the same
conversation in the MD. So I think the posting should be even less
frequent... 2 posts a week, or one every 3 days or something like that.
Moreover, once the MF topic was selected, it remained the topic for a full
month despite the fact that the conversations very rarely made it through
the month. A look through the archives confirms that activity on an MF
thread was typically at its height immediately after the topic was selected,
dropping off as the days and weeks went on. With the last two weeks of any
given months often bringing virtually no postings at all. What I would
suggest is a way for us to "opt out" of the topic once a week or so has gone
by with no activity... No sense limiting a whole month to a topic that can't
sustain a thread for 1/2 a month, right?
Any thoughts?
take care
rick
