    Steve:

Rationality is a type of intellect. Why not see intellect as manipulation
of symbols as Pirsig says and see that the first purpose of all that
manipulation was to create rationales for behavior? Rationales may be
reasonable or not by whatever standards we have, but the test of reason
creates only a subset of all intellectual patterns.

    Thanks,
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
I apologise if you have addressed questions to me recently that i may not
have responded to, but i have been busy and have not been reading posts. Sorry!

I basically agree with you, but please may i say this...

This is the way i see it:
Intellect is a symbolic response to DQ which produces an aesthetic.
One aesthetic is geometry - ratio.
    Ratios are self replicating.
Thus, rationality is a self referencing. (You say its a type of intellect.)

Now the thing is, people felt this self referencing aesthetic was the Good.
Thus, people, shapes and all manner of experience may be said to have a form,
ratio, proportion, account of a geometric nature. They have been trying to use
geometric method to prove the existence of God up to the enlightenment, and
the American philosopher Kellogg has used many world geometry to prove it also.
    Its a pile of garbage!

The S/O divide, as some people like to call it, is simply the verification of
inorganic/organic and social value differential by an intellectual
    methodology - reason.

    Simple isn't it?

    All the best,
    squonk
