    Steve, Matt and Platt,

    Steve asks Matt:

“He also often comments on how the conservatives hate his philosophy and the
liberals hate his politics. Do you know what is contrary to typical leftists
    views in Rorty's politics?”

Andy: Have you missed the whole Matt and DMB debate? David can give you a long
list of what he opposes in Rorty’s philosophy (although he may agree with his
politics he disagrees with how Rorty’s philosophy supports those politics or if
it even does) and he can probably be described as having typical leftist views.

    Steve also asks
“Any thoughts on the questions I asked before about Darwinism and pragmatism?”

    referring to an earlier comment
“Rorty (p xxii) said that pragmatists "..start with a Darwinian account of human
beings as animals doing their best to cope with the environment... Words are
among the tools that these clever animals have developed." He also used the
phrase "to become fully Darwinian in our thinking" as if it was a good thing to
do. What does he mean? Does he see Darwinism as an intellectual postulate that
helps us cope with our environment? If so, I'll take the MOQ over Darwinism any
    day. How about you?”

Andy: “To become fully Darwinian in our thinking” is referring to the first
part of your quote. Human beings are animals doing the best to cope with the
continuously changing (dynamically) environment and words (language) are among
the tools (perhaps the most innovative and important one) we have developed.
Darwinism is only one possibility of the many possible arrangement of words we
could have created to help us cope with our environment. The MOQ is another.
Sometimes they support each other and sometimes they contradict. As individuals
we can accept either of these theories as a description of our environment using
it to cope. Or we could use some other theory somebody else arranged before us.
But if we truly wanted to help “become fully Darwiniam” or incorporate the MOQ
to help us cope in our environment by using DQ as opposed to SQ (Darwinism, MOQ,
or other theory) we would create our own conglomeration of words to help us cope
best with our environment. Create (as in artist, philosopher, entrepreneur,
overman, etc.) being the key word.

    Thanks,

    Andy

Rendering oneself unarmed when one has been the best armed, out of a height of
feeling – that is the means to real peace, which must always rest on a peace of
mind; whereas the so-called armed peace, as it now exists in all countries is
the absence of peace of mind. One trusts neither oneself nor one’s neighbor
and, half from hatred, half from fear, does not lay down arms.
