Wow, what a reaction.. Never expected this to happen..
About teaching MoQ to the children.(question #1 that is)
I just did it today. I had taken into account your advise not to talk about
the MoQ but to show them quality and levels of betternes instead. Allthough
I know I would left out a lot as soon I would make a drawing to help me
clear my story, I still did it. I drew a little ladder and started asking
good vs betternes questions, while climbing this ladder. All starting with
"What would be better.... this or that". for example: "Imagine you would
live in the jungle, what would be a good skill to have? What would be a
better skill to have?" Suddenly the kids came up with answers as "it would
be good to have a lot of friends, too" That's where I drew a line in my
drawing. From there we noticed it would be a bad thing to fight with your
friends. They said it would be better to try and make more friends instead
of fighting. I was affraid they would get confused because being a strong
fighter was a good thing five minutes ago and now it seemed it wasn't
annymore. But they waren't confused at all.. It all came naturall to them. I
was quite surprised by that. They came up with many more examples,
themselves. One kid gave an example about some bloke who was beaten to death
by some guys a few years ago because he made a remark about their 'bad
public behaviour'. It happened in a village 10 km away from the school. When
I asked what happened there the kids explained 'the dead guy used the
friendshiprules and the bad guys didn't know those rules." They all agreed
it was a bad thing to do, beating up someone. But they also agreed they
really like Jackie Chan..(I told them I really like Bruce Lee, but they
never heard of him.)
Today we took the biological and the social level to talk about. I think
those two together with the intellectual are the most important ones in our
class. I wouldn't know how to talk about the anorganic level, yet. (some
kids are ugly, others are beautiful.. is this anorganic quality? :-)
Annyway, talking about social rules vs biological rules makes certain things
a lot easier. Allthough, I expect them to be. For example, bullying and the
follower/leader aspect is much clearer now to talk about. Also the fact that
being social is a skill, seperates the problem from the child. Maybe giving
hope to those who aren't that skillfull in that area. Maybe, just maybe,
doing language assignments because 'everybody knows how to do these',
finally makes sense.. But I would be a happy man if one kid says to another
"come on, I'll help you, I'll teach you how to [ paste high quality pattern
here ] " Yes, being teacher is all about making yourself useless... If you
have any ideas regarding this topic, let me know.
You made me a happy man with all your replies. Thanks again,
GJ
