    I absolutely agree that Pirsig and Rorty's view of the self is pretty nigh well the same. I do still want to maintain, though, that Rorty (won't speak for Dennett) has a hole left for something like DQ, this being Rorty's use of the literal/metaphorical distinction. Metaphor is where I find the space for "transcendence". I attempted a while back to make it more plausible by making Rorty's "poet" look like a "mystic," which you can actually see Rorty doing as far back as his '74 essay "Overcoming the Tradition: Heidegger and Dewey".
