Matt:
I absolutely agree that Pirsig and Rorty's view of the self is pretty nigh
well the same. I do still want to maintain, though, that Rorty (won't speak
for Dennett) has a hole left for something like DQ, this being Rorty's use
of the literal/metaphorical distinction. Metaphor is where I find the space
for "transcendence". I attempted a while back to make it more plausible by
making Rorty's "poet" look like a "mystic," which you can actually see Rorty
doing as far back as his '74 essay "Overcoming the Tradition: Heidegger and
Dewey".
dmb says:
I'm very skeptical of this assertion. Would you care to post some of Rorty's
statements and/or explanations of self? Would you care to make a case? What
do metaphors leave a hole for DQ? What does that mean? What does poetry have
to do with mysticism? You're not saying that poets are necessarily mystics,
are you? And finally, will you please refrain from heaping insults upon me
and just try to answer the questions?
