Guys, this is really good stuff and I agree entirely with Paul.

Paul: Hopefully the above quote will help. I think you are on the right
    track
when you say "So, words are for expression, but they aren't up for the
task of Quality" but make an error when you assume that "expression"
    starts and ends with words.

DM: This is the difference. As Heidegger suggests with his term of Care
and with phrases like 'Language speaks Man'. Rorty does not want to touch
on anything on the other side of language, such as Being. And even Pirsig
    holds
back because he does not want Quality to open up the question of something
divine/holy. But it is not human to hold off of this question. Why something
    rather then
nothing? The world appears because of Language/Man/Being. Why
    experience/quality?
    As Nietzsche says:

We take and do not ask who it is there that gives.

Not that I would suggest that the answer would be a person.

Matt, before we experience anything it has to matter to us, we have to
    notice it.
Language enables there to be a world for Man, but there has to be a before
    of
langauge. Pragmatism king of accepts this, because it says that the motive
    for our
talk is practical knowledge. This really is theimplied metaphysics of
    pragmatism.
    It assumes Care/Value/Quality/Use.

    regards
    David M
