Nominalism is the belief that the world is fundamentally made up of
particulars (as in inorganic and biological SQ), and that language and
intellect were built out of those particulars. A materialist is necessarily
a nominalist, but as I see it, those (like Pirsig) who acknowledge a
mystical basis should not blithely assume it. If you're interested in
reading something that is not nominalist, I would recommend Georg
Kuhlewind's "The Logos-Structure of the World", or anything else by him or
by Owen Barfield.
