    Hello Paul,
First off, i wish to apologise for my maudlin tone in previous posts.
Since the death of Dr. David Kelly, i have been rather disturbed by the
nature of events surrounding the Iraq invasion by the USA and the UK. And the state
visit of president Bush to the UK has left me feeling most disheartened.
Also, the suggestion that the USA is now in a pre-fascist stage appears more
clear than ever. Talk about low Quality.
    Anyway....

    Hi Mark

The Homeric tradition was probably oral for a very
long time before writing? In the oral tradition, many rhythms and
    patterns were
artistically separate from the social function of the stories? These
    rhythms
and patterns, viewed separately from the social function of the stories
    may have
been highly reinforced in the application of writing? So, the new
    awareness
of patterns of thought probably predate writing - writing may have
    accelerated
something that had been evolving for a long time?

    Paul:
This was my original position and I still think it's a good one. The
alternative I'm exploring is that the emergence of the intellectual
level was more sudden and with historical origins. I think both
explanations are reasonable and evidence can be found to support either
one. It's all speculation in the end; the most we can expect is to find
the one we like best, as with anything.

    Mark 27-11-03: I agree.

ZMM indicated our Mythos to be dominated by certain aesthetic
principles - truth, logic and systematic hierarchy. Those of us who can
    win
that game do rather well out of it, but those who lose don't tend to get
    much
    economic reward or status perhaps?

    Paul:
An example of social patterns undermining the development of new
    intellectual patterns?

Mark 27-11-03: Yes, that was my gist, but you have placed it in the best MoQ
    light.

I feel intellect has a broad pallet upon which to create than it's
very narrow application today? I may be hopelessly misleading myself!!

    Paul:
I hope not! I think the expansion of the "narrow application" of
intellect was Pirsig's driving force in ZMM. I think he called it a
    "new, spiritual rationality."

    Cheers

    Paul

Mark 27-11-03: And it is such that helps to cheer me up when the fascists get
    me down! Thanks Paul. :-)
    All the best,
    Mark
