Steve,
I was under the assumption that democracy (capital "D" or small "d") was
a system where the people (majority) decide. When we have the legislative
(elected), executive (elected) and judicial (appointed) how does that make us a
democracy. Sure, it's our "elected" officials who speak for us on determining
the supreme court judges BUT that really isn't a democracy. Here's a group of
individuals making our laws through a "middleman". They determine the laws and
outcome of cases, holding a huge grasp on our lives, yet we (the people) do not
get to elect them. That is NOT democracy, correct?
As far as everything being ruled by money...someone on this site stated
that the Bush/Gore election wasn't really lost - it was bought! I believe that.
Now, I am not a Bush fan in the least bit. Never thought too highly of Gore
either. Regardless, no matter who takes the oval office, and those officials
surrounding them, have been decided by money. Presidents (and their cabinets)
are swayed into decision making by lobbyists and contributors. When the money
shows up it becomes a "you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours" situation.
Money rules everything. This is not a debate but a fact. And it has been
this way for a very long time and, IMO, is only getting worse. (That's why
there's always been social classes!)
