Ya' know, a lot of times I'm seen as a Pirsig-basher, but its still true that I see a lot of worth in Pirsig's book. The most worth, though, I think is as Pirsig called it: as a kulterbarer. ZMM, I think, is one of those books that really summed up its particular point in time. That it did it with a large amount of philosophy is, I think, an accident.
I still think ZMM to be a great introduction to philosophy because of the range it covers and the way it makes it relevant. I guess that's why I don't think much of Sophie's World. It doesn't succeed at nearly as many levels as Pirsig's did, particulary by not really making the philosophy it introduced relevant to anything. It was just a lot of intro stuff surrounded by a cute narrative. ZMM, on the otherhand, is really something special.
