Hi ALL
So where should we draw the levels after the inorganic?
I think we should say plants, animals,
individuals (where the latter implies mythic, religious, social,
intellectual aspects). I think the social/intellectual levels
are incoherent. This is because there is a clear historic development
that sees a move from the animal to early social man who starts
to use myth to understand himself and his society. Myth is also used
to develop/create/express social bonds, rituals, rules, values, etc.
In myth studies it is well known that many myths refer to the emergence
of the individual/ego from more participatory forms of instinct and
consciousness.
In a way SO divide begins here. We then have religion emerging and this
changes
the nature of society and the relationship between society and individuals.
We also have the move from agriculture to manufacture and trade and this
changes the individual and religion and society, and also reason continues
its development and is tied to utility and manufacture and also science,
and alll this changes the individual and society. I think the level after
animal-instinct
is the social-intellectual-individual level, it is a complex level but I
think
this is a more clear dividing line than social/intellectual because these
latter
2 cannot really be seperated and does not put the individual properly in the
picture. i think this falls in with what Sam has been arguing in his paper.
