"...that reliably precipitates a mystical experience?" Are you kidding me?
Where's a rolleyes emoticon when you need one...
All ritual and practice is supposed to point you to God. If you want
"mystical experience" I don't know what to tell you. Learn to breathe
properly and meditate. And practice. Or fast and pray. Worked for me, and
I'm a fairly lousy practitioner of the mystic arts.
Of course, you could also drop acid and stare at your toes. I've done that
too. Wouldn't exactly classify it as a "mystical experience," though.
Sir, there is no waiting. March yourself over to the chapel. Doesn't even
have to be Catholic. Have a seat. Just sit. I suspect you've already heard
from Him, you just haven't listened.

Look. I have to believe that you are not so woefully ignorant of the
teachings of the church and its history as you let on. Even so, a cursory
look into the history of the church at altavista.com (hint: keywords mystic
and Catholic) will produce enough reading material to last you for an
evening.
Seriously, if personal testimony is of any use to you, I'll swear on a
stack of copies of "Lila" that mysticism is alive and well in in my study -
and in the Church. If my testimony isn't good enough, please look into the
writings of M. Basil Pennington. Or Thomas Merton. Or St. John Chrysostom.
