Dear Platt, Don (drose), Steve Peterson, (arboreal) Steve P., Jim,
Platt wrote 22 Mar 2004 09:13:51 -0500:
'Pirsig denies that one needs faith to explain the world.'
Replying 23 Mar 2004 07:30:25 -0500 to Don (22 Mar 2004 18:58:45 -0500) he
added:
'Are you introducing the argument from design to prove the existence of God?
If so, I'm in sympathy with the notion since the Darwinian explanation of
evolution is full of holes. But, the MOQ explanation seems perfectly
adequate without introducing a "designer."'
I don't think either that we need faith in the existence of God to explain
the world if we take faith in the sense of 'confident belief in the truth,
value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing' or as 'firm belief in
something for which there is no proof' and the world as 'static patterns of
value' (in MoQish) or as 'objective reality' (in SOMish). Indeed, Darwinian
explanations don't explain all Quality and the existence of Dynamic Quality
is a good alternative explanation for the existence of God to explain
existing static patterns of value.
Arboreal Steve's 2 cents (23 Mar 2004 16:46:03 -0500) were:
'many of the attributes of matter point to it having been created'
Jim replied 24 Mar 2004 10:07:33 +0000:
'Not sure about matter being "created". Self-generated, like life, with
consequent "laws" maybe.'
Physics may 'point to' creation, but cannot prove more than
'self-generation', let alone a 'creator'. It can prove Dynamic Quality from
growing complexity, however. To explain the world DQ and the interplay with
the sq it leaves in its wake are enough.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
