Hi Paul, Mark-M, and all,
First, thanks to both for your look at Rand v MOQ.
Although I rejected Rand long ago as being the feel-good philosopher
of the greedy, I find myself still leaning toward the "objectivity"
of facts. This is probably just me still trapped in SOM, but
struggling.
I don't agree with Rand that "facts are facts, independent of man's
feelings, wishes, hopes or fears." And, to the extent that I
understand Pirsig, I do agree that facts are, quoting Paul,
"subjective social and intellectual patterns of value - as are
feelings, wishes, hopes and fears - and are therefore never
independent of man."
However, I think it may be my own use and understanding of the word
"objective" that is causing problems. By "objective" I don't mean
that facts are just sitting out there, being TRUE, waiting to be
discovered. I mean, I think, that a fact is a pattern with the
HIGHEST possible value. And that this value can be recognized by
anyone and everyone, though some may not choose to recognize it. So,
for me, it's the choosing that is subjective.
So, when my Mom taught me to boil water, she listed a set of
activities (patterns?) for me to follow: Kettle, faucet, burner, gas,
match, burner, wait. My idea of "objectivity" is that anyone who
follows these steps will end up with a kettle of boiling water.
Anyway, as usual, all thoughts will be welcome here.
Thanks to all,
Mark Steven Heyman (msh)
