Dear David M.,
You ask 19 Jun 2004 14:53:01 +0100:
'we usually think consciousness emerges from the unconscious,
but could it be the other way round?
Just look at what happens when you do things repetitively.
Before instinct there must have been the first bird to fly south!
Does not SQ emerge in the wake of DQ!'
Yes, it can be the other way round. Conscious motivation can induce us to
change our behaviour. The changed behaviour can be latched as unconscious
habitual patterns. That is exactly the way in which 4th level patterns of
value influence 3rd level patterns of value in my version of the MoQ.
It is the exception rather than the rule, however. Such influence is
marginal seen from 3rd level perspective.
The first bird flying south didn't do so consciously, but in response to
mutations in its DNA and changed climatic circumstances. DQ didn't work
through 3rd and 4th level patterns of value in that case, but directly, as
there were no 3rd and 4th level patterns of value available back then.
With friendly greetings,
Wim
