Hi Horse, Platt, all,
An example of a wind-up would be me saying "Notice the high-caliber
deductive reasoning in play as the OR analyzes the results of his
Google search: Some Heymans are associated with some synagogues,
therefore all Heymans are Jews."
Or when JohnnyM asked him if he was related to a certain "Rabbi
Vogle."
The thing is, though, that I think such observations and tactics can
serve a purpose in discussions: they are sometimes very funny, and
can use this humor to emphasize important points. This is why I
don't mind having them directed at me, and why I'd hate to see them
banned entirely.
Anyway, just my fiftieth of a dollar.
Best,
Mark

As ever, thanks for your support. We may not see eye to eye on many
things but I don't think that's ever prevented us from having
reasoned
conversations and that's something I value highly. The term 'wind-up'
generally means to irritate or provoke to the point of anger and is
often used in the absence of a rational argument or because the user
finds it amusing to provoke for personal pleasure. Unlike, for
instance, 'devil's advocate' it is rarely used to promote any
thoughtful response as it is generally used for negative puposes.
Many
of Vogel's posts are examples of a 'wind-up' as he seems to delight
in
provoking and irritating purely for the pleasure of it, which is why
he is unlikely to remain on the list for too long. Personally I
dislike wind-ups and see them as another form of abuse. You have to
be
careful here though as the context and history is also important.
Hope that clears things up
