    yes i agree arlo, pirsig centred on the decline of
    craft in the post-ford era.
    remember also that even though the marketplace is a
    social pattern (and as such needs to be regulated by
    intellectual patterns sometimes) it is open to dynamic
    quality: ie it is a source of novelty and innovation,
    which is something *strictly* planned economies
    missed. this is why Platt is right when he points out
    the superiority of market economies over stagnant
    planned economies; but it also right to say that
    sustainable and relatively equitable allocation of
    resources is more important than the unfettered rule
    of market forces. there is no contradiction here. in
    SOM maybe there is but in MOQ these are complementary
    statements.
