Charles,
First of all, thank you for asking!
I believe it was Platt a while back who was on about the "sweet spot." And
I got to thinking about how that notion fit into the "art of living" so to
speak. And then I was writing to my brother and suddenly came up with an
expression - "The sweet spot of being." Because that is where I want to
live.
I can't really point with confidence to anything in particular in Persig's
work that aligns with living in "the sweet spot" yet his Metaphysics of
Quality I think has had a catalytic effect in leading me to come up with the
expression above and its implications for the way I think, emote, and behave
Krishnamurti stopped me dead in my tracks with "Truth is what is." I
understand that Persig is a Krishnamurti admirer. Yes, I think "what is" is
the absolute truth which is ineffible, indescribable with words. Words, of
course are always representational. Dynamic Quality I think is apprehension
antecedent to thinking about experience. Thinking is a useful tool for
sculpting experience to fit the contours of belief. Safe, yes. And that
certainly has its place in a life.
I am stuck always with a local reality of my own limited by my preferences,
concepts, beliefs, and memories of past experience structured in language.
The Dynamic Quality (for me) is the silent space between my thoughts.
Nolanguageness. "The Sweet Spot." The more I meditate and go to "the sweet
spot" and then return to my limited reality the more appreciative and loving
I am for little things like ice-cream, the smiles of little kids, and the
cheerfulness of dogs. On top of that I have made a decision to live "as if"
all life is sacred. As if everything is alive, aware, responsive and worthy
of equal consideration. And ... well maybe the better and more frequent
Quality" I am apprehending and experiencing is a Dynamic growth for which I
am truly grateful.
Persig's philosophy for me has simply assisted in pushing me in positive
directions and cleaning out the cluttered closet of mind. I want to thank
all the contributers here over the past year or so who have sent me off to
the library to check stuff out.
Best to all,
James Marshall
