I think one way is to develop a whole system context as opposed to a
reductionist approach to evaluating and assigning individual patterns to
individual levels. Zen and other eastern approached seem to point this
way as do a number of people biological science (there were some
references here quite sometime ago but I can't recall them).
One of the metaphors that I have found useful is to look a Pirsig's
levels as a stack of washers. I started on this a long time ago simply
as an extension of Pirsig's comment in the SODV paper that dynamic
quality was the paper or field on which the diagram was drawn. My
thinking being, at the time, that it allowed dynamic interaction not
just at the edges of the levels but in the middle also. Greater access
to the dynamic being good. Also viewed from the top it allowed for a
clearer way, IMHO, to illustrate that as each higher level evolved it
was never completely separtated from the support of the lower ones.
So while Pirsig's SODV diagram looks like this:

Mine at that time looked like this:

Later after much discussion here and investigation of similar theories
by others such as Wilbur and Spiral Dynamics I began to envision the
layers each a discrete color, and later still, each as a discrete
transparent color.(I just picked some from there SD list which seem to
correspond to both systems) This was envisioned to suggest that looking
down from the top each successive layer was "colored" by its patterns of
value on its supporting layers.

With your chaos question the following thoughts came to mind. Each of
these levels consist of events. Right? So rather than think of the
levels as a single consistent color or patterns of a single color lets
think of them as little motes of light, stars in the sky if you will.
All the yellow stars on the inorganic, green on the biological, etc. And
like stars they are not steady, some appear to twinkle, some go out,
some magically appear out of nothingness. Now we have nearly have a
chaos model, one more addition. The regular hole typical in a washer
goes away and there are many holes that move so that their alignment
layer to layer varies. More like this:

xx xxxx xxx xxx inorganic-yellow stars
Now any attempt to evaluate patterns within this type a system becomes
much more complicated and must I think at least involve evaluation of
patterns not just from the edge view like this but simutaneously from
the top view. So the possiblity of the interrelationship of patterns on
a discrete level could be related to corresponding events on other
levels. Thus feedback loops positive and negative, up and down the
levels might be more readily apparent.
Kind of like a 3D I Ching where the yarrow stalks never hit the ground.
