Wim,
When you say:
> It's not very useful to discuss that with

> intellectual values, however.
Oh I agree, they are intellectural values. It's just that at one point
way back when in discussing the intellect there were those that
suggested that "human rights" was or is "the moral code" of the
intellect. I disagreed then and still do. I ran across this in some
recent reading which may help focus the issue.
"Value, emerging as a deeper life in the wholeness of the world, turns
out to be a fundamental aspect of nature itself. The variations in
degrees of value occurs even among ice crystals, among plants in the
forest; in planetary systems; on a single mountain; in society; in human
beings. Although much of nature is relatively neutral, beginning of
differences in value occur within nature itself."
"Once people appear on the planet, the difference becomes sharply
accentuated. Most human actions are governed by concepts and visions.
These may be - but may easily not be - congruent with the wholeness that
exists....." (The Nature of Order-Vol 1-Christopher Alexander-pg 294)
I think we would agree that "concepts" and "visions" (the everyday-not
the mystical or drug induced type) a intellectual values. And that
"concepts" are more of the "What do I know & how do I know it" type
while "visions" are clearly suggestions of "what you should do." I would
say that "human rights" is more a "concept" while "egalitarianism" is
more of a "vision". While under the MoQ, "concept" and "vision" are both
hypothesis subject to future revision based on better or more
information, I would say that "concept" is more likely to be based in
actual past experience a thus more likely to "be congruent with the
wholeness (reality) that exists" while, "vision" more "easily may not
be" and thus must be treated more skeptically and results monitored more
closely a the "vision" is followed.
