Matt and all:
Paco,
>In addition, there is an overwhelmingly strong
>correlation between liberalism and low education and
>between conservativism and graduate and post-graduate
>degrees. High school drop-outs are 3 times as likely
>to vote democrat as republican. As education, skill
>and knowledge increase, people in the US become
>consistently LESS liberal and less likely to vote
>democratic.
Matt asked:
I heard the opposite was true. Out of curiosity, where is your information
from?
DMB says:
The reasoning here is specious. It assumes that liberal intellectuals are
identical to members of the Democratic party. In fact, liberal intellectuals
are only a small faction within that party. The vast majority of Democrats
are members because they benefit from liberal policies and their affiliation
is often only a matter of self-interest. Labor, women, minorites, you know.
In other words, the reasoning is specious because Paco is comparing parties,
not ideologies, world views or levels of consciousness. However, if you
compared the same kind of data and looked at the Green Party, which is much
smaller, much less of a coalition of groups and is much more demographically
monolithic, the results would be quite stark. I wonder if such data is
available?
And if anyone thinks that an ivy leaguer with a graduate degree is the very
definition of intellectual or liberal, I have three words for you: George.
Dubbya. Bush. :-)
