Hi David,
The whole Joseph Campbell/Jung/mythology strand to your thinking was why I
referred to you 'clearly' not being one of those who exalt the rational.
It's a realm of understanding that I have a great deal of interest in and
sympathy with. But as you say, "the classical heros are warriors, magicians,
healers, and all kinds of non-intellectual types. They all represent the
individual's effect on the larger society, but this archetype existed and
operated for ages before the intellect was even born."
Would you say that classic mythology is all about a person transcending the
social level, touching DQ, and coming back with an improvement to social
Quality? If so, we're in complete agreement on that.
A different question: do archetypes only function as guides or motives for
behaviour if a person's understanding exists primarily at the social level?
Or, put another way, once we can see and recognise the archetypes, are we
bound to enact them in our own lives? (A friend who is a Jungian therapist
says yes, I'm not so sure).
Interesting discussion BTW.
