Howdy:
J. Baxter asked:
my question with quality is this... what is the "mechanism" of quality?
if quality is a noun, if quality enables reality... how is the enabling
done?
dmb says:
Welcome. Its hard to tell exactly what you're asking, but I have a hunch.
I'd guess that you simply want to know how it works. What's the mechanism?
How is quality enabled? You're asking about the relationship between reality
and its source, no? I hope that's about right and will proceed as if it
were...
Pirsig's Metaphysics Of Quality (The MOQ) says that everything is Quality,
but that there are two distinct kinds; Dynamic Quality (DQ) and static
quality (sq). DQ is the ground of all being, the force behind evolution, the
divinity encountered in mystical experience. It is the unknown, the void out
of which all form arises. Static quality is the known. (Pirsig further
divides sq into four discreet levels and his rational morality is based on
distinguishing these levels, but that's another topic.) It is the
form-filled world of things; stars, forests, cites, ideas, and anything you
can imagine. These two kinds of quality exist in a perpetual state of
evolutionary tension. They exist in a constant state of interplay. This
cosmic dance is what we recongnize as evolution, except that evolution takes
place in all realms, not just biology. Static quality has evolved toward
greater freedom and complexity so that the higher, more evolved levels have
a greater capacity to keep on dancing, a greater capacity to respond to DQ.
Its a snowball effect on the grandest of scales. I think that is how it
works. Does that help?
Thanks for your time,
DMB
