Do I need language to be self-aware of me playing the piano? 'Stating
something' is like a bubble in the rest of the whole of the momentary
consciousness, if you catch my drift. I think that tigers and dolphins
for instance do have the ability to abstractize, but they just can't
communicate it efficiently as we humans can. Like we are sort of lucky
that we are in an evolutionary linage that gave us hands- they can be
used to create tools from sharp stones to atom-smashing devices.
Similarily, growling by some tiger because she thinks about that rabbit
that escaped from her hunt, won't be able to put this message through to
another tiger... but I do think she can be self-aware of her being
grumpy because she couldn't catch that rabbit.
Humans have the vocal apparatus to transmit complex sound-patterns.
I think (not very original, no) that through being able to communicate
and share our thoughts, we don't stand alone in our thinking, and that
we can think together, and thus were/are able to create such complex
societies and all. But language is 'just' a communication tool, and not
primary to self-awareness (although words such as 'I, me, mine' do help
to hold on to that bubble of self-awareness inside the rest of
awareness)
I do not know about dolphin language, however. They don't have hands or
other limps to shape things, but in a docu of Discovery or something I
learned that the dynamics of dolphin language is still a mystery- so
maybe they do share complex thoughts and can have constructive
dialogues. Must be very philosophical too, them swimming around all the
time. ;-)
Friendly greetings, Patrick.
