I don't think that the two characters insanity were really very different or
located at different levels (ie. biological or intellectual) both of their
behaviours were contrary to accepted social practice... therefore they are
labeled insane (see Pirsigs writings about "a culture of one")
Whatever caused them to adopt this "culture of one" seems to be irrelevant.
Insanity itself is a social category, people who don't conform to societal
norms are (if their behaviour is sufficiently deviant) deemed insane.
"Insanity" in being a social term, can only occur at the social level.
You can think what you like (intellectual level) as long as it doesn't
effect your functioning in society... only then does it become a real
(social) problem for men in white coats or blue uniforms to deal with (these
men are themselves protectors of the social level).
