    Hi Rich,

Last word on this from me, I promise. I think I understand wherein
lies the nature of our disagreement.

But a metaphysics isn't something one believes; it's not something
that is right or wrong; it's a system of thought one finds useful or
not useful. Pirsig says this himself.

    rich:
All metaphysics are grounded in unprovible assumption.

    msh says:
Yes. And we accept those assumptions for the purpose of getting the
metaphysics off the ground. This does not mean that we must accept
    the assumptions as literally true.

    rich:
If you don't accept the assumption, you can't honestly accept the
    metaphysics.

    msh says:
Well, I can't get the metaphysics to work without accepting the
assumption, right. But I'm not committed to the literal truth of
the assumption. When I want to explain the phases of the moon, one
of the assumptions I accept is that Gravity causes the Moon to orbit
the Earth. This allows me to do some cool mathematical calculations
that are very useful in describing the Moon's motion relative to the
Earth and Sun. This does not mean that I think Gravity really exists
and literally creates the Moon's orbit. Same deal with Quality,
    Subjects, and Objects.

    rich:
It's hard for me to understand what hold the MoQ can have for you
ifthe literal truth of it'sassumptions are unimportant to you.

    msh says:
Well, hope this helps. I'll leave you with the last word, if you want
    it. :-)

    Best,
    Mark Steven Heyman (msh)
