Hello Mark:
Thanks for making my point!
"Suppose there are only..."
That's exactly the kind of thing
that is the problem, pulling sphincter
estimates rather than tracing the actual
numbers; pretending to be able to say
how and why everyone died and ignoring
new information that does not fit in
with a precious theory. Reality is more
complex than armchair estimates.
Look closely and they break down.
How do you figure the addition of
information to better understand
some historical process is to be
equated with a justification of
genocide?
To me it seems that any enlargement
of understanding is a moral duty in
a fourth level discussion, an attempt
to enlarge DQ over tired old SQ, as
it were, intellect over social.
thanks--mel

Yes, too difficult a task for all those tired old academicians
tossing round the numbers, but not for mel.
Let's make it simple: Suppose there were only two million Indians in
North America in 1800. Let's say by 1900 there were 250,000, as a
million had chosen to "kill themselves" by assimilating, and 750,000
had been murdered because they chose not to assimilate and the
conquering power really, really wanted their land.
How does the choice of the million justify the slaughter of the
750,000?
This sort of apologetic for genocide has been around for as long as
there have been colonial powers.
