Erin, Sam and all MOQers:
DMB had said:
Pirsig says she does and does NOT have quality at the same time. She has
biological quality, even if that's starting to fade, but she has no
intellectual quality and is socially pretty far down the scale.
Erin asked:
How do you reconcile your interpretation of Pirsig's interpretation of Lila
with this...."A person who holds an idea is a social entity, no matter what
ideas he holds. The ideas he holds are an intellectual entity, no matter who
holds them."
dmb says:
I'm looking at your latest post in this thread, Erin, the one that includes
quotes from Pirsig's letter to Paul, but I still don't see what you're
asking. It must be that you're reading something into my comments that I did
not intend. I honestly don't see any discrepancy between Pirsig's comments
and my view of Lila. I never thought she was an intellectual and I never
thought she was unconscious and on the floor either. It seems to me that
when Pirsig says she has no intellectual quality, it doesn't mean she's
incapable of speech or of adding 2+2, but when it comes to the skillful
manipulation of abstract symbols, she's sorely lacking. She's like a lot of
people we all know. I'm sorry to be such a misogynistic egomaniac, but I
just don't feel confused about this point.
