Chin said to dmb:
I think I may have thrown you off with the words " . . . where your total
focus is on the moment." By moment, I don't mean a point in time, but a
moment in focus. snip...Yes, it does mean become fully aware of the
'objects' that are in front of you, and it doesn't involve asking "Are these
objects real?" It simply means 'focus'. snip...There are Zen teachings that
involve spending years meditating, but there are also those that claim you
can open up to a mystic experience while washing your bowl....snip
dmb replies:
Thrown off? I don't think so. I think we just disagree on the matter. As I
understand it, lots of people understand Zen in this Americanized "chop
wood, carry water" way and I never thought much of it. Its too Hallmarky and
sentimental. I believe it's based on the same misconceptions I've been
getting at all weekend in this thread. No matter how you try to parse it,
Chin, you are still talking about the realities of the divided world, about
things and events in the field of time and space. Again, this is exactly
what I'm NOT talking about.
I think you're really just romanticizing a common sense idea: that people
should pay attention to their lives and not be distracted. Its a fine idea.
In my experience, most people are sort of numb and oblivious. I even wept
about it once. But c'mon Chin, does focusing on a child's homework, or
anything else, really have anything to do with direct experience of the
undifferentiated aesthetic continuum? No, of course it doesn't.
No-thing-ness has no things on which to focus nor any one to do the
focusing.
Or are you telling me that your daughter is gifted, goes to a special school
and her assignment that evening was to achieve Satori with her dad? No? Well
then please, gimme a break here ok? Sam may be on the verge of a
breakthrough that is years in the making and you are most definately NOT
helping.
Like to fly-fishing with you sometime, but right now you're just bummin me
out.
