Sam,
You seem to be missing the essential lesson which is that Struan is
giving Horse a taste of his own medicine.
You said it was disingenuous of Struan to require that Horse find quotes
of positivists specifically degrading art and science because this was
a "guiding assumption" of positivists, and assumptions get little mention.
I doubt this is the case where good philosophy is concerned, but it hardly
matters for the point Struan is making. The demand that spurious claims be
backed by quotations is Horse's criterion, not Struan's. So far Horse has
only provided us with "naiads". Struan is simply insisting that Horse either
play by his own rules or suffer the charge of hypocrisy. It should not be
Struan's fault or concern that the quotes are hard to dig up. This is a
problem Horse has made for himself.
Perhaps, Sam, you weren't paying much attention to how all this got
started, and if so you may want to look at those links at the bottom
of Struan's previous post. It's been nearly a month since this all
started, and no doubt Horse has been dragging his heels for the greater
part of it hoping memories will fog over his role in it. This was done
under the pretext that he was too busy with site duties to mail
a reply, though apparently not so busy that he couldn't prepare a long,
detailed post defending himself against plagiarism that would make any
trial lawyer blush with pride. Never mind that he failed to see the true
bone of contention; had to have it bluntly spelled out for him; saw that
he was wrong afterall; took the vindictive option of removing the essay
instead of properly crediting it; and said not a word about it.
Subsequent to this I read, with twisted chagrin, posters affirming their
continued support for Horse despite his recent behaviours, or heaven
help the MOQ, because of them.
Glenn
