I was fortunate enough to hear a tape of a talk by Alan Watts (from the
50s). He was explaining Buddhism, Toa and Vedanta thought. He said that
they were neither a philosophy nor a religion, but were a process to free
oneself from the cultural induced trance. Anyway, he stated that the
origins of the meaning of the word 'religion' was 'to bind'. Is this
true? He further stated that like language, religion creates rules that
bind a culture. Do you think this is true? Do you think to be bound to
this culture is a good thing?
