When I was reading this
MARK:
Selfish people often claim to care about the rights of others, but
their actions almost always belie their self-comforting rhetoric.
Suppose someone patents a life-saving drug with the intention of
maximizing profits for himself.
ERIN: it reminded me of a really good movie I saw awhile ago ..called Madness and Genius where this scientist did keep life saving information (the movie went into the topic of the dangers of keeping everybody alive---and selfish and selflessness for that matter). So then I was thinking about how it comes down to the intentions of the scientist not what he did.
(it's funny too because a student who discovers he has this info...used the analogy of a business I think to try to understand why this info would be dangerous for humanity)
Then I read this:
msh:
The only pose here is yours in pretending to know the motives of
everyone who works for the public good. Besides, what matters is
what people do, not why they do it.
I think it is funny that you can look into the motives of business people but criticize Platt for looking into the motives of politicians. So going back to my scenerio "what the person does" is not the only issue in deciding whether something was a selfish or selfless act....you had to look at the intentions. If you know the motives of business people then why can't Platt know the motives of politicians?
Great movie by the way.
