    Hi Platt,

Been busy entertaining applied linguists :-), left some threads slip by...

About the "Music as Motivation" piece on Wikipedia:

    [Platt]
    > I saw in the article the statement
    > that music enhances the emotional impact of film and related that
    > immediately to Pirsig's comments about the hypnotic effect of movies:
    >
    > {snipped Lila quote}

    [Platt continued]
    > Having been reminded of that quote I thought to myself that one way to get the
MOQ idea across would be to make a movie about it with the appropriate musical
score to punch it up emotionally, i.e., tapping into this "powerful force" to
improve our culture. As for the relative merits of Mozart vs. the Beatles,
we've been through that debate so no need to go through it again. I'd like to
point out, however, that John Williams as provided musical scores for some very
popular modern movies --.scores which can hardly be considered in the genre of
    rock n' roll. :-)

I've had mixed feelings over the years about the failed attempt to cinematize
ZMM. One on hand, I think, its a good thing. Movies as such tend to be always
so much less than the book, and with ZMM it would be exponentially so. On the
other, I think, it may have "gotten the word out" to an audience not likely to
    "find" the book.

Also is my tendency to "replace" images in my head that have been generated by
reading a book, with images decided upon by the movie director when I see the
film. What I mean is we tend (at least I do) to generate a little
personal-movie in our heads (maybe this a tendency those who are "visual
thinkers" have?) when we read a book. The movie writes over that and it is very
hard (impossible for me) to "erase the movie images" and go back to my own
    personally-derived images.

Putting music to either ZMM or Lila is, however, an intriguing exercise. I'm
sure we each have generated some type of musical accompaniment in our heads
when we re-read the books. With ZMM sometimes I hear America's "Horse with No
Name". And in the classroom "no grades" experiment maybe Pink Floyd's "Another
Brick in the Wall Pt. 2" :-)... and not to have to point this out, but it fits
nicely with the ""Narrow it down to the front of one building on the main
street of Bozeman. The Opera House. Start with the upper left-hand brick."

I realize, of course, you had a more "sophisticated" :-) musical score in mind.
So, just for fun, what accompaniment would you add to a ZMM/Lila movie if you
were "in charge". Anyone else with ideas? I'd certainly love to hear them.

    Arlo
